The other day I learned that Nina Hartley was an atheist. I’m not going to post any pictures of her because I don’t have her permission and she’s easy enough to google even though given her profession, I doubt she cares. The preceding disclaimer like statement relates to the post I am making more than you may expect this far into it.

Thursday, September 30th, 2010Burning Daylight: The Aftermath of My Totalled Car
Thursday, September 30th, 2010So, my car burnt to a crisp on Tuesday (September 28th). It was unexpected, but there were no injuries and only one other car was dinged at all. Even that ding was relatively minor. (I am not claiming to know the cost of repairs. I am making a structural comment.) Despite being out my only car, things could have been a lot worse.

Thursday, September 30th, 2010Fascinating Editorial
Thursday, September 30th, 2010Check this out. It’s an editorial that suggests a substantial difference in the quality of the average person in the “non-believer” category on the Pew research versus the quality of the average person in the “atheist/agnostic” category.
I’ll let the editorial speak for itself. But reading the editorial gives the impression that there is a certain amount of intellect on display among people who know what position they are taking. That’s the impression I got. You can check it out for yourself.
While you’re doing that, don’t forget atheism is not the only minority worth your consideration. Sexism is still out there. Ableism is still out there. There are other bloggers for those that might be worthy of your time. Just saying.
Evangelize? Never.
Wednesday, September 29th, 2010So I have this quote in the comments section of a post from earlier this week:
As with outspoken Christians, you can’t be around Seth for long, or follow his blog without becoming aware of the fact that he’s an athiest. He wears his (non)religious identity on his sleeve, and evangelizes frequently about the superiority of his belief system. You, too, “lead” with this information, by way of your screen name here.
I take issue with this. In my view, evangelizing incorporates not only speaking my belief but working to convert people. That’s really different from people who are close friends hearing me talk of my disbelief.

Here’s My Car Burning
Tuesday, September 28th, 2010I thought the event should be commemorated as it was surreal. Everybody is fine. Only one other car got damaged at all and that appears minor. It turns out GM had noticed this problem.

Sethics: Nuancing the Conversation
Monday, September 27th, 2010I think it’s worth it to dredge up some thoughts on atheism. Being an atheist means something. It’s meaning is “without or against belief.” I say that because those are the two ways I often use it. But I want to stress that atheist is what I am and what I think. There’s more that you’re going to want to know.

The Only Way I Would Go Winetasting
Monday, September 27th, 2010After leading into the weekend with a night of karaoke at Baja Bean, my girlfriend and I lackadaisically got ourselves together for a meet up of skeptics, atheists, and general nonbelievers in Amherst. I wanted to go because The Friendly Atheist from Chicago was going to be there and I like meeting people. It was a better idea than I had imagined and I’m glad I went.

Wanted: A Newer Atheism
Thursday, September 23rd, 2010The world is a very diverse place in the market of beliefs. People have beliefs and then people have lack of belief. This is 101 for most atheists and agnostics. The “New Atheist” movement was definitely fascinating to see because I came from a place where having no belief was frowned upon. But it’s time to build a better lack of belief system.
